Pawn tier · Pawn Tier Boss · Universal · plays the Caro-Kann + London
Marcus guards the top of the Pawn tier, and he earned the spot by refusing to have an obvious weakness. He is a graduate student who studies chess in the gaps between lab work, and his repertoire is built for reliability: the Caro-Kann against 1.e4 and a direct ...c5 setup against the London after 1.d4. Both give him solid pawns, active pieces and very few ways to lose quickly.
As a player he is the most balanced rival you have met so far. He will defend a worse position patiently, attack when you give him a target and simplify when he is ahead. What he still lacks is depth: at 1400 he can be outcalculated in a sharp position, and he sometimes plays a natural move without checking the tactic behind it. He is comfortable in almost any structure, so the fight is less about avoiding his strengths and more about choosing a position whose plans you understand better than he does.
At 1400 ELO, Marcus plays like a real club player at that rating: he sees simple threats but still leaves pieces hanging and misses tactics two or three moves deep. Check every capture he offers, and look for loose pieces after each of his moves. Most games at this level are decided by the first clean tactic, not by the opening.
Marcus answers 1.e4 with the Caro-Kann, 1...c6 and 2...d5. In the Classical line they take on e4, develop the light-squared bishop to f5 before playing ...e6, and meet h4 with ...h6. It is a solid, low-risk setup with no weak pawns.

Against the London System (1.d4, Nf3 and an early Bf4) Marcus answers with ...d5 and ...Nf6, then hits the centre with ...c5. The plan is the most direct one Black has: pressure d4, bring the queen to b6 to eye b2, and push ...c4 to gain space on the queenside once White's queen has gone to b3.

Marcus is the tier exam: he trains you to play your own repertoire with understanding, because a balanced opponent cannot be beaten by tricks alone.
