Smothered mate, anastasia's mate, the Greek gift, the Arabian mate — recognize these patterns and you'll deliver mate sequences your opponents never see coming.
Mate patterns are visual signatures. Once you've seen the same mating net 50 times, you spot it on the board in two seconds — sometimes 4-5 moves before it actually happens. This is one of the biggest gaps between intermediate players and advanced ones. The intermediate calculates each mate from scratch. The advanced player recognizes the pattern and just knows.
Here are 10 patterns that show up in real games at every level. Memorize the visual signature of each. Practice spotting them in puzzle databases. The investment pays back tenfold the first time you mate someone in a tournament with a pattern you'd seen 100 times in your study.
The most common mate pattern in amateur chess. The opponent's king is stuck on the 8th (or 1st) rank because its own pawns block escape. A rook or queen reaches the rank with check, no defender, no escape. Mate.
Visual signature: enemy king on g8 (or g1) with pawns on f7-g7-h7 (or f2-g2-h2). Your heavy piece can reach the back rank with no obstacles. Always look for this when you have an open file pointing at the enemy king's rank.
Position: White to move. Ra8 is mate — black's own pawns on f7/g7/h7 lock the king out of every escape square.
A knight delivers check and the king has no escape squares because all neighboring squares are blocked by the king's OWN pieces. The king is 'smothered' by its defenders.
The classic version: enemy king on h8, defender pieces on g7 and h7. Your knight lands on f7 with check. The king can't capture the knight (defended by another piece), can't move (every neighbor blocked by its own pieces), and can't be saved by interposing (no square to interpose into). Mate.
Visual signature: a knight that can give check to a king completely surrounded by friendly pieces. Most common after a queen sacrifice that 'forces' the king into the trap.
Position: Philidor's Legacy. Knight on f7 mates — king blocked by own rook on g8 and pawns on g7/h7. Black to move, but no legal move exists.
A bishop sacrifice on h7 (or h2) that opens up the enemy king. White plays Bxh7+. Black king takes the bishop (Kxh7). White brings up Ng5+ and the queen, mating in a few more moves.
Visual signature: white bishop pointing at h7, white knight ready to come to g5 or e5, white queen with diagonal access to h5. Black king on g8 with pawns on f7-g7. When you see this setup, evaluate Bxh7+ even if it looks crazy — sometimes it works.
An ancient pattern (older than European chess). A rook and knight cooperate. The rook gives check on the back rank. The knight covers the king's only escape square. Mate with just two pieces.
Visual signature: enemy king in a corner. Your knight on a square two diagonal jumps from the corner (e.g., knight on f6 with enemy king on h8). Your rook can reach the king's rank. Knight covers escape, rook gives check. Mate.
A knight cuts off the king's escape; a rook delivers mate from the side. Most often: enemy king on h7 (pushed there by previous moves). Your knight on e7 covers g6 and g8. Your rook on h-file mates with Rh1+ (if the king has no other escape) or Rh4-Rh1 in two moves.
Visual signature: knight that controls the squares around an enemy king on the edge of the board, plus a rook with file access. Common after kingside attacks where the enemy king has been pushed off g8.
Two rooks alternate giving check on adjacent ranks, walking the king up the board until it reaches the edge and is mated. Easy to deliver, looks beautiful.
Technique: rook on the 7th rank gives check, king moves to the 8th, second rook gives check on the 8th, king has nowhere to go. Mate in two.
Queen and bishop on the same diagonal pointing at the enemy king's square (most often h7 or h2). The queen mates first; the bishop supports if the king tries to capture or escape.
Visual signature: white queen on c2 and white bishop on b1 (or similar), pointing at h7. Black has no defender for h7. Qxh7# is mate.
A trap involving a knight sacrifice on g4 (or g5). Black plays Ng4 attacking the white queen, white captures hxg4, and black plays hxg5 opening the h-file. White's open h-file means white loses to the rook lift Rh1-Rh8#.
More of a trap than a pure pattern, but it shows up enough that knowing the trigger setup matters: opposing pawn on g6, your knight ready to land on g4, your rook ready to lift to the h-file.
Named after Paul Morphy's famous game at the opera in Paris (Morphy vs. the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard, 1858). A rook gives mate on the back rank, supported by a bishop.
The setup: enemy king has been pushed to the back rank, your bishop on c4 (or similar) supports the c8 square, your rook delivers Rd8# with check. The bishop's support means the king can't escape to b8 or e8. Mate.
A double check with two bishops mates the king. The pattern is rare but devastating when it happens — the king has nowhere to go because both bishops control its escape squares.
Setup: enemy king has castled queenside (king on c8). Your two bishops sit on the diagonals leading to c8. A discovered check creates double-check from both bishops simultaneously. The king can't move to a square not covered by both bishops. Mate.
The fastest way to learn mate patterns is filtered puzzle training. Lichess puzzle database lets you filter by theme — there's a 'mate pattern' tag for each of these. Do 20 of one pattern in a row (e.g., 20 smothered mates). After 20, you'll start seeing the pattern shape on the board immediately. Repeat for each of the 10 patterns over a month and your pattern recognition will be transformed.
After block training, switch to mixed mate puzzles. Real games don't tell you which mate is on the board — you have to identify it yourself. Mixed training builds the recognition skill in the way you'll need in actual games.
There's also one purely passive method that helps: when you watch master games or famous games, when you see a mating combination, pause and identify which pattern it is. 'That's a smothered mate.' 'That's the opera mate setup.' Naming the patterns out loud builds the visual library faster than just absorbing them passively.
